Asparagus does it do well down here?  (United States)

I grew aparagus with no problem when I lived up in NY. I see it down here in the stores but I do know it needs some cold weather to take. Has anyone had success with it here in Fl. I live in the Ocala area, Central Florida.

Re: Asparagus does it do well down here?  (United States)

i have not tried yet but since asparagus takes awhile to grow and nearly all veggie crops wont take the florida summer heat so im sure it would be difficult

Re: Asparagus does it do well down here?  (United States)

I am in South Florida, Palm Beach County. I just planted 1yr sets of asparagus. Within a week, they are up and 16" tall. I do not know if they will produce as they like a cold winter. I thought I would try tricking them into a winter when we have a cold snap with very cold water and some crushed ice on top of soil. I grow everything in containers down here due to the soil. I also grow all organically. Will let you know in 6mo or so if it is working.
