Tampa bans use of lawn sprinklers  (United States)

Tampa, Fla., is in the throes of a severe drought. Tampa Bay Water's reservoir is drained, and its desalination plant is currently underproducing by 10 million gallons a day. So the Tampa City Council took drastic measures to save water and banned the use of lawn sprinklers, according to a story in the St. Petersburg Times. Hand watering with a hose equipped with a shutoff nozzle will be allowed. The move is expected to save 30 million gallons of water a week. The restrictions take effect April 3 and apply to residences, businesses and city government. A Hillsborough County Commissioner wonders if the ban will save water in the long run. "The concern I have with a total ban on yard [sprinklers] is that when we do get through this drought, it's going to take two to three times more water to bring the yards back to life," Commissioner Al Higginbotham told The Times.
